Best payment gateways for small business: how to actually think about the choice

"Best payment gateway" depends heavily on whether you're a merchant buying direct, or a software company or ISO deciding what to build on. White-label gateways like NMI and USAePay solve a different problem than a direct-to-merchant checkout product.

If you're a small business buying direct

Vertically integrated processors that combine gateway, processing, and merchant account into one signup (the Stripe/Square/PayPal category) generally offer the fastest self-serve onboarding and one published rate card. This is usually the simpler path for a single-location small business with no existing ISO relationship.

If you were placed with a gateway through a reseller or ISO

If your merchant account came through an ISO, agent, or software platform, you're likely on a white-label gateway like NMI or USAePay without necessarily seeing that brand name — the console and support you use is branded as your reseller's. In that case, "which gateway is better" matters less than "is my reseller's pricing and support actually competitive," since the underlying platform is largely the same regardless of which reseller sold it to you.

If you're an ISV or software platform deciding what to build on

This is where the NMI/USAePay category is actually built for you. A processor-agnostic gateway lets you avoid being locked into one processor's fixed platform fee and gives you room to negotiate acquiring terms as your volume grows. The trade-off is a steeper initial integration and a partner relationship to manage, rather than a drop-in checkout widget. See our NMI vs USAePay comparison for how the two differ on that specific decision.

If you're an ISO building a merchant portfolio

A brandable, processor-agnostic gateway is close to a requirement if you want to compete with all-in-one PayFacs while retaining control of the merchant relationship and recurring processing revenue. Both NMI and USAePay are built for this; the practical decision usually comes down to acquirer certifications for your target verticals and the buy-rate/revenue-share terms you can negotiate.

The honest answer

There isn't a single "best" gateway independent of who's asking. A direct small-business buyer, a reseller's existing merchant, an ISV building new infrastructure, and an ISO building a portfolio are solving four different problems, even though all four might end up touching the same underlying platform.
