NMI Review: a processor-agnostic gateway built for distribution

Network Merchants Inc. (NMI) is a white-label payment gateway founded in 2001 and headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois. It's built to sit underneath ISOs, ISVs, and payment facilitators rather than to be sold directly to a single small merchant — and that distinction shapes almost everything about how it should be evaluated.

The short version

FOR: ISOs, ISVs, and PayFacs that want acquirer choice  ·  AGAINST: a single merchant shopping direct

NMI isn't a merchant account provider and it isn't trying to be Stripe. It's infrastructure: a routing and tokenization layer that lets a partner plug in more than 200 acquirers and processors, brand the front end as their own, and move volume between backends without re-platforming. If you're a merchant who found NMI through a reseller, the experience you get is mostly a function of that reseller's setup — not NMI's platform ceiling.

WHERE IT WORKS

  • ISVs embedding payments who want acquirer flexibility instead of a single fixed processor
  • ISOs who need a brandable gateway to compete with all-in-one PayFacs
  • Omnichannel merchants needing card-present, card-not-present, and unattended device support in one platform

WHERE IT DOESN'T

  • A solo merchant looking to sign up directly with self-serve, same-day onboarding
  • Buyers who want one flat, published price rather than a partner-negotiated rate

What NMI actually is

NMI describes itself as a full-stack payment gateway and embedded-payments platform, and the "gateway, not processor" distinction matters. NMI doesn't underwrite merchants or hold funds; it routes transactions to whichever acquirer or processor a partner has configured, then hands back tokenized data, reporting, and recurring-billing tools through a single API and admin console. That architecture is what lets a partner stay processor-agnostic: switch acquirers for better pricing or reliability without asking every merchant to re-integrate.

Distribution model: ISO, ISV, reseller, or white-label

NMI works with several partner types rather than one. An ISO takes on merchant liability and is registered with the card networks; a reseller typically operates underneath a registered ISO without taking on that liability; an ISV integrates the gateway into its own software; and a white-label partner rebrands the platform entirely under its own name. NMI itself is not a payment facilitator, though the platform can support PayFac-style and semi-PayFac onboarding flows for partners who want faster, more automated sub-merchant approval. See our NMI partners breakdown for how the revenue-share and buy-rate structure typically works.

Developer tooling

For ISVs, the relevant question isn't "does it have an API" — every gateway does — it's how much of the merchant experience you control. NMI's SDKs, hosted-fields options, and device certifications (it lists several hundred EMV and unattended-device certifications) are aimed at letting a software platform embed payments without becoming the party that touches raw card data. That reduces PCI scope for the ISV, at the cost of a steeper initial integration than a drop-in checkout widget from a vertically integrated processor.

Where the fit gets complicated

Because NMI sells almost entirely through partners, a merchant's day-to-day experience — support responsiveness, dashboard usability, how disputes are handled — is set by whichever ISO or ISV resold the platform. Two merchants on the same NMI gateway can have meaningfully different experiences depending on their reseller. That's normal for white-label infrastructure, but it means most consumer-facing "NMI reviews" are really reviews of a specific reseller's service layer, not the platform itself.

NMI and USAePay

NMI acquired USAePay in February 2021. The two platforms continue to operate as separate brands with separate consoles, and USAePay still serves its own long-standing base of resellers and merchants out of its Glendale, California office. For a side-by-side, see our NMI vs USAePay comparison.

This review reflects publicly available information about NMI's platform and partner model as of 2026. Pricing, buy rates, and support terms are set individually by NMI and its partners and were not independently verified against a specific merchant account. Confirm current terms directly with NMI or your ISO before signing.
